Hôtel Vauluisant, typical of the Renaissance period, now houses the Hosiery Museum and the History of Troyes and Champagne Museum. The Hosiery Museum It was in the 18th century, with the introduction of knitting machines, that a real knitwear industry was born in Troyes. Thanks to certain inventive Aube engineers who improved the old machines and invented new ones, the city took the lead in the French hosiery industry in the 19th century and achieved international recognition. The wealth of the museum’s collections are an indication of the importance of the economic and social role played by the knitwear industry in Troyes for almost two centuries. The equipment, the objects and documents preserved here illustrate the development of this industrial sector from 1750 to the present day. History of Troyes and Champagne Museum Paintings, sculptures and stained glass from the famous Troyes school which flourished in the 16th century are brought together in this Museum. At the time when a wave of Italianism began to unfurl across the whole of France, the Troyes workshops managed to affirm their originality in the context of the great Medieval tradition. The best masters endowed with a deep mystic awareness excluding neither realism nor grace, succeeded in creating a School that resembled no other. The museum preserves some magnificent examples of decorative sculpture which experienced a tremendous rise in popularity in the 17th century, as well as brilliant stained glass, a reflection of the heights achieved but never equalled in the art of painting on glass.
